Artificial Intelligence in Passive Fire Protection: Smarter Compliance & Safer Builds

Passive Fire NZ team using AI tools for safer building compliance

No doubt about it, AI is disrupting all sectors – ours too, of course. So, as daunting as the concept of ‘artificial intelligence’ might have seemed to us initially, at Passive Fire NZ we have taken a pro-active approach to learning about it and up-skilling as best we can.

As Joe Pope, our General Manager said, “Initially, AI felt like “the big unknown. We wanted to make it ‘known’. Not only to keep up, but to find ways to use it to our advantage too – and hopefully find benefits for our clients.”

What we’ve discovered has been exciting. We’ve made day-to-day tasks more efficient and communication clearer, but we’ve also had a lot of fun along the way. It’s been great to approach the challenge as a team, and have the chance to start learning something from the beginning, together – AI is a great leveler.

Here’s how we’ve approached it – and if you’re interested to find out more – we’re always happy to share!

1. We decided to start. The best and most crucial first step.

2. We got a coach (like any good sports team would 😉 ). We have monthly sessions with an AI trainer who has walked us through the basics, then showed us how to use the programmes more extensively. The whole Passive Fire NZ team is invited to these monthly sessions.

3. We made it a competition (because that’s how we roll!) Who could build the best digital assistant? Automate HR onboarding? Become a toy action figure version of themselves?

Here’s where we’re seeing really positive impacts already:
– Language translation: ESL team members now write emails and reports faster, with more confidence and clarity.
– On-site communication: supporting quicker, safer and clearer exchanges.
– HR automation: induction of new staff – including documentation and FAQs
– Call centre support: an 0800 number that responds to queries via email.
– Meeting productivity: instant summaries and action plans.

We’ve effectively created more time to spend where it really counts – adding value at a higher strategic level, focusing on quality of delivery, spending more time with clients and of course, together as a team. The physical, the strategic, the relationships.

At the end of the day, we’re solution-agnostic, if it’s the best tool for the job, we’re in!
