Green Star Buildings in New Zealand: Raising the Standard for Sustainability

Sustainable building in New Zealand has come a long way with an exciting future ahead and the Passive Fire NZ team are always excited about the opportunity to contribute towards a healthier built environment in New Zealand, supporting our clients to achieve green star-accreditation for a number of projects over the years – including the L’Oréal distribution facility in Auckland.
Since the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) introduced Green Star in 2007, the framework has been used by industry to deliver buildings that are more energy – and carbon-efficient, healthier for occupants, and better for the planet. Passive Fire NZ is proud to have been a partner on a number of projects gaining Green Star certifications – building confidence and competence along the way. This is an area that we are particularly proud and passionate about.
Green Star is more than a certification – it’s a roadmap for sustainable design and construction setting benchmarks in energy efficiency, water use, carbon reduction, indoor environmental quality, materials, and more. It is future facing – considering how the built environment might better serve future generations – which is key to our ethos at Passive Fire NZ. Whilst certifications so far are concentrated mainly in Auckland – it’s awesome to see numbers building in other areas – particularly Wellington and Christchurch where Passive Fire NZ teams operate. Projects range from office buildings and warehouses to education facilities, healthcare environments, and industrial hubs.
In August 2024, Green Star Buildings New Zealand was launched, replacing the previous Design & As Built rating system. The new iteration takes things further, refining certification requirements to incorporate 16 minimum expectations and ensuring every certified project delivers energy efficiency, water efficiency, healthy indoor environments, responsible construction, and smart site selection. The system also reflects global and local sustainability trends – including climate action, resource efficiency, social sustainability, supply chain transparency, and occupant wellbeing – while helping New Zealand buildings meet evolving expectations from investors, regulators, and communities. The Passive Fire NZ team is able to support reaching these goals and work as a strong partner on a Green Star build.
Green Star has become an industry benchmark, driving innovation and higher standards in construction and design. While some projects, like the L’Oréal distribution facility in Auckland, achieve national milestones such as Green Star 6 – Design and As Built (v1.1), thousands of other projects across the country are implementing the framework to improve sustainability outcomes, even if not all pursue full certification.
At Passive Fire NZ, we connect our expertise in passive fire protection, safety, and high-quality construction practices to this broader Green Star movement. By delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable solutions, we help project teams meet their Green Star goals and ensure buildings are not just compliant but resilient and future-ready.
The growth of Green Star in New Zealand reflects an industry-wide commitment: building smarter, healthier, and more sustainable spaces. We’re proud to be staying at the fore with developments in this space and for us, projects like L’Oréal are a reminder of what’s possible when ambition, innovation, and sustainability intersect – and an example of how Passive Fire NZ helps our partners achieve this.
